Any ideas on some alternatives to Hobart?

I recently made the switch to freelancing and now pull in around $120k a year. My partner and I have plans to start a family, so we're thinking about more affordable living options. We love living in Hobart, but the rental prices here are getting a bit out of hand. We're on the lookout for a city that still offers cool local spots—think cafes, bookstores, even Ikea—but with homes that won't break the bank and a more relaxed vibe. My flexible job means we're open to moving, but we’re a bit cautious about jumping into something new without really knowing if it’s the right fit. Anyone have any recommendations for Australian cities or towns that strike that balance between quality of life and affordability? I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences! Thanks a bunch!

Exploring more affordable living options while maintaining a certain lifestyle can be a smart move, especially with plans to start a family and a flexible job situation. Here are a few Australian cities and towns that might offer the balance between affordability, quality of life, and the vibrant local culture you’re looking for:

  1. Geelong, Victoria: Just an hour away from Melbourne, Geelong offers a significantly lower cost of living while still providing access to cool cafes, arts scenes, and beautiful beaches. It’s a growing city with a relaxed vibe and plenty of amenities.

  2. Ballarat, Victoria: Known for its historical significance and vibrant arts community, Ballarat is another option where housing remains more affordable compared to major capital cities. It has a range of cafes and cultural spots, and it’s only about an hour and a half from Melbourne.

  3. Launceston, Tasmania: If you’re keen on staying in Tasmania, Launceston could be a great choice. It’s smaller than Hobart but still offers a charming lifestyle with all the necessary amenities, including cafes and local arts, at a more affordable price point.

  4. Toowoomba, Queensland: Known as the ‘Garden City,’ Toowoomba provides a relaxed atmosphere with a lower cost of living compared to Brisbane. It has a growing café culture, plenty of parks, and cultural attractions, making it a family-friendly option.

  5. Newcastle, New South Wales: A coastal city with a strong community feel, Newcastle boasts beautiful beaches, a growing food scene, and cultural attractions. It offers the benefits of city living but at a more affordable cost than Sydney.

Each of these cities offers a unique blend of lifestyle and affordability. It’s worth visiting these places, if possible, to get a feel for the local community and see if it matches your expectations and lifestyle needs.
